Payment of fees and renewals
Trademarks and designs must be renewed after a given time to remain valid. An annual fee must be paid for a patent. It is voluntary whether you want to maintain your application or your right. We therefore do not issue an invoice.
When do you have to renew your IP rights?
Each type of right has its own requirements for renewal. Details for each are below:
- Renewal is due every 10 years
- There's no limit to the number of times a trade mark can be renewed.
- Your trade mark can be renewed up to a year before the renewal due date.
- Your design registration is valid for five years from the date when you file your application.
- You can renew it further for four five-year periods up to a maximum of 25 years.
- We will send you an alert that the registration can be renewed when it is approaching the expiry of a five-year period.
- A patent lasts for up to 20 years
- You must pay an annual fee each year to keep the patent in force.
- For pharmaceutical and plant protection products it is possible in certain cases to apply for a five-year extension (SPC).
- We will send one payment alert that applies to the first three years of fees. After that time it may be wise to set up a reminder to yourself.
- Renewal is due every 10 years
- There's no limit to the number of times a trade mark can be renewed.
Remember annual fees
We do not issue an invoice, but we will send a letter of notification to you as the applicant or holder, or to your patent attorney about two months prior to the payment deadline.
Patent customers with a patent attorney are notified only when the first fee is due for payment.
However, we do recommend that you set up a free electronic alert.
Please notify us of changes
If you need to make any changes to your application or registration, you must notify us in writing in good time before you pay the renewal fee.

Trademarks
The renewal fee for trademarks*:
- Trademark registrations that expire before 1 March 2024: Registrations can be renewed at the earliest one year before the payment deadline and no later than six months after.
- Trademark registrations that expire up to and including 1 March 2024: Registrations can be renewed at the earliest six months before the registration deadline and no later than six months after.
*This is due to the transitional rules in connection with new regulations.
Design
You can pay the renewal fee for design at the earliest one year before the payment deadline.
Patent
The annual fee for a patent can be paid at the earliest 6 months before the payment deadline.
Certificate of renewal for trademarks and designs
We send a certificate of renewal to the owner or their agent about 10 days after we have received payment of the renewal fee.
Renewals and annual fees in other countries
Fees for renewals of trademark and design registrations and annual fees for patents vary from country to country. To find out how much you have to pay in other countries, contact your patent attorney or the patent office in the country in question.
What happens if you miss the deadline?
If you do not pay the fee within the deadline, we will send a final warning to you as the holder or to your representative. We will send this letter approximately two months before the final payment deadline.
To maintain your patent application, patent or registration, you must pay the annual fee or renewal fee and an additional fee (late payment fee) within six months of the original payment deadline.
Your patent application will be finally shelved, or the patent will expire if you do not pay the annual fee and the late payment fee within the final deadline.
Your trademark or design registration will cease if you fail to pay the renewal fee and the late payment fee before the final deadline.
If you have missed the payment deadline, and therefore lost your right, you may apply to have your application or right restored.

Be aware of misleading invoices
Private citizens and companies in Norway receive from time to time misleading invitations and invoices in connection with their trademark and patent rights.
Many mistake these invoices for geniune requests for payment of fees for the registration of patent applications, or for the registration or renewal of their trademark.
The Norwegian Industrial Property Office (NIPO) would like to emphasise that such invoices have no connection with us, nor do they have any value as payment for industrial property rights in Norway, or anywhere else. Only NIPO and any patent agent you may have may claim payment of fees for patents and trademarks.
